Quick answer
A cash purchase does not require a membership.
Audible says anyone with an Amazon account can use a credit card or an Audible coupon to buy titles à la carte. You can purchase through the Audible app for Android, the Audible site, or Amazon. A membership is relevant when you want to use credits received with a plan; it is not a prerequisite for buying a specific audiobook with a payment method.
What a membership changes
Buying a title and having access to a title are different things.
No membership needed
Buy it à la carte
Pay the price shown for the title with an eligible payment method. Audible says a title bought with a credit card or debit card remains in your Library after you cancel a membership.
Membership benefit
Use a plan credit or included access
Credits come with selected Audible Premium plans. Plus Catalog access and other included benefits are not cash purchases, so their availability follows the applicable membership terms.
The useful question is therefore not only “Do I need to join?” but also “Am I buying this title, or is it simply included for now?” If keeping one particular audiobook matters, confirm that the checkout option is a purchase before completing it.
How to buy
Start with the listing, then read the purchase option carefully.
- Find the exact audiobook edition. Search by title and author, then check the narrator and running time so you do not pay for a different edition than intended.
- Choose a cash purchase, not a trial, if you only want the title. On Amazon, Audible says a non-member may see “Try Audible Free” or “Buy with 1-Click.” The latter is the full-price purchase route.
- Review the total and confirm once. Audible says a purchase through its desktop or mobile site is confirmed immediately for a Buy option; a cart purchase is completed from checkout.
- Check your Library and email confirmation. Audible says a completed site purchase is sent to your Library and generates an email confirmation. Keep that record if you later need support.

Purchase channels
The available buttons can depend on where you shop.
Audible documents purchases in the Android app, on its desktop and mobile sites, and through Amazon. Its help article describes a credit or cash choice in the Android app; website options can include a direct Buy option and, on desktop, a cart option. On Amazon, a non-member can choose a free-trial prompt or buy with 1-Click. The exact price, title availability, and payment choices shown to your account can vary by marketplace and device.

Avoid a common mix-up
“Add to Library” is not always the same as “buy.”
Audible distinguishes titles marked “Buy for $0.00,” which it says are yours to keep, from titles marked “Add to Library” in the Plus Catalog. The latter are included membership titles rather than owned purchases. Before relying on a title for a trip or a long-term Library, check the label and the checkout screen rather than assuming every title displayed in the Library has the same access status.
Common questions
Membership-free buying, clarified.
Do I need an Audible account to buy a book?
Audible says anyone with an Amazon account can buy titles à la carte. The account and marketplace determine the options shown during checkout.
Will I keep a book I bought with cash?
Audible says a title purchased with a credit card or debit card remains in your Library after you cancel. This does not mean every included membership title has the same status.
Is buying one book the same as starting a free trial?
No. On Amazon, Audible lists “Try Audible Free” and “Buy with 1-Click” as different options for a non-member. Read the selected option and the current terms before confirming either one.
